How to Wash Your Wig

Properly washing and caring for your wig ensures it stays in top condition for longer. Since wigs require a different cleaning process than natural hair, following these expert tips will help prevent tangles, maintain moisture, and keep your wig looking fabulous.

I. Preparation Before Washing

Detangle First

  • Apply a few drops of olive oil to a brush and gently detangle the wig section by section.

  • If the wig is on a plastic head mold, tape it securely to prevent movement during the process.

Gradually Wet the Wig

Avoid soaking the wig in water all at once. Gradually wet the hair, brushing gently as you go. This prevents the hair from swelling and tangling.

Condition First

Before applying shampoo, spray a mixture of 50% conditioner and 50% water onto the wig. Brush the hair gently from the ends upward to ensure even distribution and reduce tangles.

II. Washing Your Wig

Use the Right Products

Choose a sulfate-free shampoo specifically formulated for wigs. Silicon Mix Shampoo is a great option for maintaining the softness and shine of wig hai

Apply Shampoo Gently

Use foam shampoo or a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of water and shampoo for even application. Gently massage the shampoo into the wig without scrubbing. Rubbing like you would on natural hair can cause tangling.

Rinse Properly

Stand under lukewarm water and rinse the wig from root to tip in one direction. Avoid scrubbing or swirling the wig in water, as this can create knots and tangles.

III. Conditioning for Hydration

Apply Conditioner Carefully

Use a hydrating conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths to the ends. Avoid applying conditioner to the roots or attachment points, as this can loosen adhesives.

Leave It In

Let the conditioner sit for 3-5 minutes to deeply hydrate the hair.

Rinse and Brush

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water while brushing in one direction to ensure the conditioner is evenly removed.

IV. Drying and Styling

Blot Excess Water

Gently blot the wig with a towel. Do not rub, as this can cause tangles and frizz.

Air Dry

Place the wig on a wig stand to air dry. Avoid using heat, but if necessary, use a blow dryer on a cool or warm setting.

Comb and Style

Once dry, use a brush or wide-toothed comb to style the wig as desired.
